Terms of Use

Effective October 30, 2026. SmokeScreen is an independent news publication published by Kris Rodobolski in Milton, Ontario, Canada. By using this site, you accept these terms. They're written in plain language on purpose.

What this site is

SmokeScreen publishes fact-first journalism: news stories, claim checks, and a weekly long-form show, built from primary sources that are linked in every story. Pieces stamped EDITORIAL are opinion, are labelled as such, and appear under the author's name. Everything else is reported as facts, with the framing of more than one side where a story has sides.

Accuracy and corrections

We check every load-bearing claim against documents before publishing, and we show the documents so you can check us. Mistakes can still happen. When one is found, the story is corrected with a dated note in the story itself and the correction is logged permanently in The Ledger — no silent edits. If you believe a verdict is wrong, challenge it through any story's “Challenge this verdict” box; the re-check and its outcome are logged in The Ledger either way.

Not professional advice

Content on this site is journalism and general information. It is not legal, financial, medical, or any other professional advice, and it shouldn't be relied on as a substitute for a qualified professional about your own situation.

Tips, documents, and other submissions

You're welcome — encouraged — to send story tips, documents, and corrections. By sending material to SmokeScreen, you confirm that you have the right to share it, and you give SmokeScreen a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, and publish it in connection with our reporting. You keep ownership of anything that's yours. Please don't send material you don't have the right to share.

Publication is always at our discretion, and submissions may be edited for length and clarity. We treat source confidentiality seriously: if you ask to remain anonymous, we will not voluntarily disclose your identity.

Using the site

Read it, link to it, quote it with credit and a link back — that's what it's for. Don't disrupt the site or its hosting, don't submit unlawful material, don't impersonate anyone, and don't present our work in a way that falsely implies we endorse you or your product.

Our content, and the documents

SmokeScreen's own writing, design, audio, and video are © SmokeScreen / Kris Rodobolski unless stated otherwise. The primary documents in The Receipts Vault belong to the governments, courts, and organizations that issued them — most are public records — and are collected here so readers can verify our reporting.

Links to other sites

Our receipts and references link to third-party sites (archives, official reports, coverage). We link them as sources, not endorsements, and we aren't responsible for their content or availability.

Liability

The site is provided “as is.” To the fullest extent permitted by law, SmokeScreen and its publisher aren't liable for losses arising from use of the site, inability to use it, or reliance on its content. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that can't be limited under applicable law. Our commitment when we get something wrong is the one above: a public, dated correction — that's our remedy of choice, and it's on the record.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Ontario, Canada.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change, the new version will be posted on this page with its effective date. Questions about these terms go through the contact form. See also our Privacy Policy.
