Privacy Policy

Effective October 30, 2026. Written in plain language, because a privacy policy nobody can read isn't one. SmokeScreen is published by Kris Rodobolski in Milton, Ontario, Canada.

The short version

This site runs no advertising and no third-party trackers. We collect exactly two things: an email address if you join The Daily Receipt list, and whatever you type into the contact form if you write to us. We never sell, rent, or trade personal information. Ever.

What we collect, and why

The Daily Receipt signup: your email address, and which part of the site you signed up from (homepage or footer) so we know what's working. It is used for one thing: sending you The Daily Receipt when the email launches. The list is not sending yet.

The contact form: your name, your reply email, the kind of message, an optional source link, and your message — plus the story's identifier when you use the “Challenge this verdict” box. It is used to read and answer your message, and, for challenges, to re-check the story and log the outcome in The Ledger.

Technical basics: our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and browser type) for security and operations, the way nearly every website does. We don't build profiles from them.

What stays on your device: if you use the Studio preview or install the site as an app, drafts and preferences are stored in your own browser, on your own device. They are not sent to us.

Where it lives

Signups and messages are stored in SmokeScreen's database (hosted by Supabase). Form submissions are also delivered to the newsroom inbox through a form-delivery service (Web3Forms). Access is limited to the publisher and is protected by sign-in. No one else gets a copy.

Cookies

This site sets no advertising or analytics cookies. Your browser may store the site's own functional data on your device (for example, Studio drafts or the installed app) — that data never leaves your device.

Your choices

Your information is yours. At any time you can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted — use the contact form and we'll act promptly. When The Daily Receipt starts sending, every email will carry a working unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the list. Until then, one message to us does the same thing.

Children

SmokeScreen is a general-audience news site and isn't directed at children. If you believe a child has submitted personal information to us, contact us and we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with its effective date, and the change will be noted in The Ledger — the same no-silent-edits rule as our journalism.
